Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
Thus have I heard – on one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika’s park.
There the Venerable Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus: “Friends, bhikkhus.”
‘‘Āvuso’’ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato sāriputtassa paccassosuṃ. Āyasmā sāriputto etadavoca –
“Thưa hiền giả”, các tỳ-khưu ấy đáp lại Tôn giả Sāriputta. Tôn giả Sāriputta nói điều này –
“Friend”, those bhikkhus replied to the Venerable Sāriputta. The Venerable Sāriputta said this –
“‘Right view, right view’, friends, is said. To what extent, friends, is a noble disciple one of right view, whose view has gone straight, who is possessed of unwavering confidence in the Dhamma, who has arrived at this true Dhamma?”
“We would come from far away indeed, friend, to the presence of the Venerable Sāriputta to learn the meaning of this statement. It would be good if the meaning of this statement would occur to the Venerable Sāriputta himself. Having heard it from the Venerable Sāriputta, the bhikkhus will remember it.”
“Then, friends, listen, attend well, I shall speak.” “Yes, friend”, those bhikkhus replied to the Venerable Sāriputta. The Venerable Sāriputta said this –
“When, friends, a noble disciple understands the unwholesome, understands the root of the unwholesome, understands the wholesome, understands the root of the wholesome – to that extent too, friends, a noble disciple is one of right view, whose view has gone straight, who is possessed of unwavering confidence in the Dhamma, who has arrived at this true Dhamma.
But what, friends, is the unwholesome, what is the root of the unwholesome, what is the wholesome, what is the root of the wholesome?
Killing living beings, friends, is unwholesome, taking what is not given is unwholesome, misconduct in sensual pleasures is unwholesome, false speech is unwholesome, divisive speech is unwholesome, harsh speech is unwholesome, idle chatter is unwholesome, covetousness is unwholesome, ill will is unwholesome, wrong view is unwholesome – this, friends, is called the unwholesome.
And what, friends, is the root of the unwholesome? Greed is a root of the unwholesome, hatred is a root of the unwholesome, delusion is a root of the unwholesome – this, friends, is called the root of the unwholesome.
“And what, friends, is the wholesome? Abstention from killing living beings is wholesome, abstention from taking what is not given is wholesome, abstention from misconduct in sensual pleasures is wholesome, abstention from false speech is wholesome, abstention from divisive speech is wholesome, abstention from harsh speech is wholesome, abstention from idle chatter is wholesome, non-covetousness is wholesome, non-ill will is wholesome, right view is wholesome – this, friends, is called the wholesome.
And what, friends, is the root of the wholesome? Non-greed is a root of the wholesome, non-hatred is a root of the wholesome, non-delusion is a root of the wholesome – this, friends, is called the root of the wholesome.
‘‘Yato kho, āvuso, ariyasāvako evaṃ akusalaṃ pajānāti, evaṃ akusalamūlaṃ pajānāti, evaṃ kusalaṃ pajānāti, evaṃ kusalamūlaṃ pajānāti, so sabbaso rāgānusayaṃ pahāya, paṭighānusayaṃ paṭivinodetvā, ‘asmī’ti diṭṭhimānānusayaṃ samūhanitvā, avijjaṃ pahāya vijjaṃ uppādetvā, diṭṭhevadhamme dukkhassantakaro hoti – ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, ariyasāvako sammādiṭṭhi hoti, ujugatāssa diṭṭhi, dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgato, āgato imaṃ saddhamma’’nti.
“When, friends, a noble disciple thus understands the unwholesome, thus understands the root of the unwholesome, thus understands the wholesome, thus understands the root of the wholesome, he, having entirely abandoned the underlying tendency to lust, having dispelled the underlying tendency to aversion, having uprooted the underlying tendency to the view and conceit ‘I am’, having abandoned ignorance and aroused true knowledge, makes an end of suffering in this very life – to that extent too, friends, a noble disciple is one of right view, whose view has gone straight, who is possessed of unwavering confidence in the Dhamma, who has arrived at this true Dhamma.”
Trong tiếng Anh, chúng tôi tạm dịch sát cấu trúc hợp từ “the view and conceit ‘I am’”.
“Good, friend”, those bhikkhus, having delighted in and rejoiced at the Venerable Sāriputta’s words, asked the Venerable Sāriputta a further question: “But, friend, might there be another way too, by which a noble disciple is one of right view, whose view has gone straight, who is possessed of unwavering confidence in the Dhamma, who has arrived at this true Dhamma?”
“There might be, friends. When, friends, a noble disciple understands nutriment, understands the origin of nutriment, understands the cessation of nutriment, understands the way leading to the cessation of nutriment – to that extent too, friends, a noble disciple is one of right view, whose view has gone straight, who is possessed of unwavering confidence in the Dhamma, who has arrived at this true Dhamma.
But what, friends, is nutriment, what is the origin of nutriment, what is the cessation of nutriment, what is the way leading to the cessation of nutriment?
There are, friends, these four kinds of nutriment for the maintenance of beings that have come to be, or for the support of those seeking a birth.
Katame cattāro? Kabaḷīkāro āhāro oḷāriko vā sukhumo vā, phasso dutiyo, manosañcetanā tatiyā, viññāṇaṃ catutthaṃ.
Thế nào là bốn? Đoàn thực, thô hay tế; xúc là thứ hai; ý tư là thứ ba; thức là thứ tư.
Which four? Edible food, gross or subtle; contact as the second; mental volition as the third; consciousness as the fourth.
Taṇhāsamudayā āhārasamudayo, taṇhānirodhā āhāranirodho, ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo āhāranirodhagāminī paṭipadā, seyyathidaṃ – sammādiṭṭhi sammāsaṅkappo sammāvācā sammākammanto, sammāājīvo sammāvāyāmo sammāsati sammāsamādhi’.
Do ái tập khởi nên vật thực tập khởi; do ái đoạn diệt nên vật thực đoạn diệt; chính Thánh đạo Tám chi này là con đường đưa đến sự đoạn diệt của vật thực, tức là – chánh kiến, chánh tư duy, chánh ngữ, chánh nghiệp, chánh mạng, chánh tinh tấn, chánh niệm, chánh định.
With the origin of craving there is the origin of nutriment; with the cessation of craving there is the cessation of nutriment; just this Noble Eightfold Path is the way leading to the cessation of nutriment, that is – right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.
‘‘Yato kho, āvuso, ariyasāvako evaṃ āhāraṃ pajānāti, evaṃ āhārasamudayaṃ pajānāti, evaṃ āhāranirodhaṃ pajānāti, evaṃ āhāranirodhagāminiṃ paṭipadaṃ pajānāti, so sabbaso rāgānusayaṃ pahāya, paṭighānusayaṃ paṭivinodetvā, ‘asmī’ti diṭṭhimānānusayaṃ samūhanitvā, avijjaṃ pahāya vijjaṃ uppādetvā, diṭṭhevadhamme dukkhassantakaro hoti – ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, ariyasāvako sammādiṭṭhi hoti, ujugatāssa diṭṭhi, dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgato, āgato imaṃ saddhamma’’nti.
“When, friends, a noble disciple thus understands nutriment, thus understands the origin of nutriment, thus understands the cessation of nutriment, thus understands the way leading to the cessation of nutriment, he, having entirely abandoned the underlying tendency to lust, having dispelled the underlying tendency to aversion, having uprooted the underlying tendency to the view and conceit ‘I am’, having abandoned ignorance and aroused true knowledge, makes an end of suffering in this very life – to that extent too, friends, a noble disciple is one of right view, whose view has gone straight, who is possessed of unwavering confidence in the Dhamma, who has arrived at this true Dhamma.”

“There might be, friends. When, friends, a noble disciple understands suffering, understands the origin of suffering, understands the cessation of suffering, understands the way leading to the cessation of suffering – to that extent too, friends, a noble disciple is one of right view, whose view has gone straight, who is possessed of unwavering confidence in the Dhamma, who has arrived at this true Dhamma.
But what, friends, is suffering, what is the origin of suffering, what is the cessation of suffering, what is the way leading to the cessation of suffering?
Birth too is suffering, aging too is suffering, death too is suffering, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure and despair too are suffering, association with the unloved too is suffering, separation from the loved too is suffering, not to get what one wants, that too is suffering, in brief the five aggregates subject to clinging are suffering – this, friends, is called suffering.
Katamo cāvuso, dukkhasamudayo? Yāyaṃ taṇhā ponobbhavikā nandīrāgasahagatā [ponobhavikā (sī. pī.)] tatratatrābhinandinī [nandirāgasahagatā (sī. pī.)], seyyathidaṃ, kāmataṇhā bhavataṇhā vibhavataṇhā – ayaṃ vuccatāvuso, dukkhasamudayo.
Và này chư hiền, thế nào là sự tập khởi của khổ? Chính là ái này, đưa đến tái sinh, đi kèm hỷ và tham, tìm hoan lạc chỗ này chỗ kia, tức là – dục ái, hữu ái, phi hữu ái – này chư hiền, đây gọi là sự tập khởi của khổ.
And what, friends, is the origin of suffering? It is this craving that leads to renewed existence, accompanied by delight and lust, delighting here and there, that is – craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, craving for non-existence – this, friends, is called the origin of suffering.
And what, friends, is the cessation of suffering? It is the remainderless fading away and cessation, the giving up, the relinquishing, the release, the non-reliance with regard to that very craving – this, friends, is called the cessation of suffering.

But what, friends, is ignorance, what is the origin of ignorance, what is the cessation of ignorance, what is the way leading to the cessation of ignorance? That which, friends, is not knowing suffering, not knowing the origin of suffering, not knowing the cessation of suffering, not knowing the way leading to the cessation of suffering – this, friends, is called ignorance.

‘‘Siyā, āvuso. Yato kho, āvuso, ariyasāvako āsavañca pajānāti, āsavasamudayañca pajānāti, āsavanirodhañca pajānāti, āsavanirodhagāminiṃ paṭipadañca pajānāti – ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, ariyasāvako sammādiṭṭhi hoti, ujugatāssa diṭṭhi, dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgato, āgato imaṃ saddhammaṃ.
“Có thể có, này chư hiền. “There might be, friends.
But what, friends, are the taints, what is the origin of the taints, what is the cessation of the taints, what is the way leading to the cessation of the taints? There are, friends, these three taints – the taint of sensual desire, the taint of existence, the taint of ignorance.

This is what the Venerable Sāriputta said. Satisfied, those bhikkhus delighted in the Venerable Sāriputta’s words.

The Discourse on Right View, the ninth, is finished. [Variant: some manuscripts add summary verses here – see the note at §104.]
Thuật ngữ then chốt trong MN 9
| Pāli | Tiếng Việt | English | Ghi chú |
|---|---|---|---|
| ujugatā diṭṭhi | tri kiến đi thẳng | view that has gone straight | Điệp khúc lặp lại trong cả mười sáu pháp môn. |
| aveccappasāda | bất động tịnh tín | unwavering confidence | Niềm tin dựa trên sự hiểu thấu, không lay chuyển. |
| akusalamūla / kusalamūla | căn bất thiện / căn thiện | root of the unwholesome / of the wholesome | Tham-sân-si và không tham-không sân-không si (§89). |
| āhāra | vật thực | nutriment | Bốn loại: đoàn thực, xúc, ý tư, thức (§90). |
| samudaya / nirodha | tập khởi / đoạn diệt | origin / cessation | Khuôn bốn phần của Tứ Thánh đế áp vào mỗi pháp. |
| nirodhagāminī paṭipadā | con đường đưa đến sự đoạn diệt | the way leading to the cessation | Luôn là Thánh đạo Tám chi. |
