Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā kurūsu viharati kammāsadhammaṃ nāma kurūnaṃ nigamo.
Thus have I heard – on one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Kurus, [at] Kammāsadhamma, a town of the Kurus.
There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: “Bhikkhus.” “Venerable sir,” those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this:

“Bhikkhus, this is the one-way path for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the passing away of suffering and displeasure, for the attainment of the true method, for the realization of Nibbāna, namely, the four establishments of mindfulness.

Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in regard to the world; he dwells contemplating feelings in feelings, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in regard to the world; he dwells contemplating mind in mind, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in regard to the world; he dwells contemplating phenomena in phenomena, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in regard to the world.

Or else mindfulness that ‘there is a body’ is established in him just to the extent necessary for bare knowledge and bare mindfulness; and he dwells independent, and does not cling to anything in the world. In this way too, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body.

“Thus he dwells contemplating phenomena in phenomena internally, or he dwells contemplating phenomena in phenomena externally, or he dwells contemplating phenomena in phenomena internally and externally; or he dwells contemplating the nature of arising in phenomena, or he dwells contemplating the nature of passing away in phenomena, or he dwells contemplating the nature of arising and passing away in phenomena. Or else mindfulness that ‘there are phenomena’ is established in him just to the extent necessary for bare knowledge and bare mindfulness; and he dwells independent, and does not cling to anything in the world. In this way too, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating phenomena in phenomena in terms of the seven factors of awakening.
The section on the factors of awakening is finished. [Variant syā. adds: “The first recitation section.”]
